Crisis Communication: Planning, Counseling, Spokesperson Abilities The primary secret to good crisis management? Tell the truth. The hardest part? Being ready to do that, when the situation is scary, and the media is writing bad things about you, and your customers are mad at you. So, the way to tell the truth is to be already prepared for any question that might come to you. Are you ready for what might happen? Public Relations is two sides of a coin: promote the good news, and handle the bad. “Handling it” is done in a calm demeanor, with a clear statement of fact, supplying background information to back up your position, answering questions without apology but with sympathy for all concerned. This is a learned skill. There’s no substitute for experience in crisis planning and crisis management. Lee Ann Fleming, principal of Spark PR Marketing, has lots of experience in this arena. Call on her to help put together a crisis plan, do the media training necessary to have it ready, and be there for you if you ever need it. 303-594-1750, leeann.fleming@yahoo.com
